RGNUL confers Law Degrees on 465 Students
Patiala, 25 August:
Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab held 4th Convocation at its campus. 340 B.A. LL.B (Hons) FYIC, 119 LL.M (OYC) and 6 Ph.D. degrees were awarded during the ceremony.
Honble Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri, Judge, Supreme Court of India was the Chief Guest. Honble Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Visitor, RGNUL presided over the function.
Justice Mohan Peiris, former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka; Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Mahesh Grover, Justice Inderjit Singh Walia, Justice Rajsh Bindal, Justice JA Masih, Judges, Punjab & Haryana High Court; AG Punjab Mr Atul Nanda, Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, Vice Chancellor, NLU, Delhi; Prof. (Dr.) V. Vijayakumar, Director, NLIU, Bhopal; Prof. (Dr.) Paramjit S. Jaswal, Vice-Chancellor, RGNUL, Prof. (Dr.) G.I.S.Sandhu, Registrar, RGNUL and Prof. (Dr.) Anand Pawar, Controller of Examinations, RGNUL graced the occasion. Members of the General Council of RGNUL were also present on the occasion. Honble Justice Krishna Murari, Chief Justice, Punjab & Haryana High Court and Chancellor, RGNUL conferred the degrees on the graduates, postgraduates and Ph.D. candidates.
Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri delivered the convocation address. In his address, he complimented RGNUL for churning out talented lawyers who would become pillars of Indian Judiciary in the future. He eulogized the bond and co-operation extended by various NLUs for promoting academic excellence. Justice Sikri congratulated the students for their achievements. He shared his experiences with the gathering. Justice Sikri exhorted the students to have a vision and mission for the realization of their dreams. Quoting an excerpt from the autobiography of MC Setalvad, first Attorney General of India, he said that hard work is required for success in legal profession. He remarked that minutes and hours of hard work and not the number of years in the profession enable a lawyer to get recognition and success. He also talked about the three phases of evolution of lawyers. He advised the students to work honestly. Just as different countries are in different time-zones, people are governed by different timings for success and recognition,
Justice Sikri said. In a knowledge-based economy, students must remain a learner throughout their lives, he added. He reminded the students of inherent knowledge in man, as explained by Swami Vivekananda. Justice Sikri also quoted Paulo Coelho, NaniPalkhivala, Max Muller and Arnold Toynbee in his address. He shared observations of Palkhivala on education with the students. Education performs the function of enlightening the understanding and enriching the character, he added. In a world of declining public/private morality and intolerance, lawyers have a vital role to play, remarked Justice Sikri. He also advised the students to maintain a work-life balance, to give time to family, to respect parents and teachers and to inculcate good hobbies. He exhorted them to tap their potentialities, develop the ability to think clearly and to become instruments of change in the society.
Prof. (Dr.) Paramjit S. Jaswal, Vice-Chancellor, RGNUL, welcomed the guests and presented the annual report of the institute. Prof. Jaswal focussed on the achievements of the University. RGNUL has been accredited with A grade by NAAC. The University has also been granted the status of an autonomous institute and has been ranked 2nd among the law schools of super excellence by Competition Success Review, Prof. Jaswal said.
61 (sixty-one) meritorious students received special medals, (instituted and endowed) for outstanding performance in eleven different categories, academic and co-curricular activities. Justice UdayUmeshLalit, Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal, Justice Krishna Murari, Justice Surya Kant and Prof. (Dr.) Paramjit S. Jaswalgave away the medals to the achievers. Ms. MehakPuri (LL.M. 2015-16), Ms. Jagriti (LL.M. 2016-17) and Ms. VibhutiJaswal (LL.M. 2017-18) were awarded RGNUL Medal of Excellence, Surana and Surana Medal for Excellence and University Medals for Academic Excellence. Ms. Jagriti and Ms. VibhutiJaswal received Late Sh. C.B. Sharma & Smt. S.D. Sharma Medal for Best Girl Student for the academic sessions 2016-17 and 2017-18 respectively. Mr. Arpit Sharma, Ms. GarimaSaxena, Ms. Ishita Sharma, Ms. GurleenKaur, Ms. DewanganaChillar and Ms. SimranjeetKaur (LL.M) received RGNUL Medal of Excellence in diverse specializations for their respective batches. RGNUL Medal of Excellence for B.A.LL.B. (Hons) was received by Mr. Dharav Shah, Ms. ShanyaRuhela, Ms. KirandeepKaur (Batch 2011-16), Ms. Isha Singh, Ms. NikishaHada (Batch 2012-17), Ms. Harshita Singh (Batch 2013-18).
Justice Kesho Ram Passey Memorial Medal and Aparajita Paul Memorial Medal were bagged by Mr. Dharav Shah, Ms. Isha Singh and Ms. VrindaPareek. Mr. Divyanshu Mittal also received Aparajita Paul Memorial Medal. Ms. Arpana (Batch 2011-16), Ms. DivyaGodara (Batch 2012-17) and Ms. Harshita Singh (Batch 2013-18) were given away PavaniSatyanarayanamma Medal for Academic Excellence. Ms. ShanyaRuhela, Ms. DivyaGodara, and Ms. VrindaPareek received Mohan Law House Medal. K.T.S. Tulsi Medal was awarded to Ms. Aishwarya Malik, Mr. Shubham Vijay (Batch 2011-16), Ms. DivyaGodara (Batch 2012-17), Ms. Harshita Singh and Mr. MohitKhandelwal (Batch 2013-18). Chancellors Medal was awarded to Mr. Dharav Shah (Batch 2011-16), Ms. Isha Singh (Batch 2012-17), and Ms. VrindaPareek (Batch 2013-18). Vice-Chancellors Medal was received by Ms. Arpana, Ms. Aishwarya Malik (Batch 2011-16); Ms. ShivaniBhatnagar, Ms. Isha Singh and Ms. Srishti Bose (Batch 2012-17); Ms. Harshita Singh and MohitKhandelwal (Batch 2013-18).
