World University organized ‘Basant Kirtan Darbar’

The Department of Music of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University organized Basant Kirtan Darbar dedicated to the 400th Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. The Kirtan was performed in Basant Raag by Prof. Harpreet Singh, Prof. Ishpreet Kaur, Prof. Shobha, Mr. Baljit Singh and the students of Music Department. Dr. Prit Pal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that today is a holy day in the Sikh tradition. On this day, 40 Muktas were liberated by Dasam Patshah Guru Gobind Singh Ji on the hills of Khidrana. The holy day of Maghi is celebrated by the Khalsa Panth at Muktsar Sahib to commemorate this auspicious day. Also on this day, the foundation of Sri Darbar Sahib was laid by Sai Mian Mir ji. Dean Academic Affairs of the University, Prof. Sukhwinder Singh Billing said that in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Basant is a seasonal raag which is recorded at 25th place. The season for singing this raag starts from the day of Maghi to the day of Hola Mohalla. Prof. Billing himself also participated in the Kirtan Darbar by singing hymns from Gurbani. He said that the tradition of singing Basant in the spring season is prevalent since Guru Kaal. He also informed that Basant Kirtan Darbar is an annual event of the World University which is organised in the month of Maghi. Prof. Billing said that although there have been some changes in the academic calendar due to covid-19, the Basant Kirtan Darbar was held as required with due diligence. He said that in the coming days, the students would be allowed to come to the University with proper precaution and the academic environment of the university would return to normal. The function was attended by all the head and staff of teaching and non-teaching departments. At the end of the function, Dean Students’ Welfare Dr. Gurjinder Singh thanked the Vice-Chancellor, Dean Academic Affairs, all the staff members and the students.
