25-year-old weightlifter Harjinder Kaur from Mehas village of Nabha, who created history by winning a bronze medal in the 71 kg weight category at the Commonwealth Games, has been quite a struggle so far. Harjinder Kaur’s family lives in a one-room house in the village. The income of the family is limited due to taking land on contract and doing agriculture. In such a situation, the father and brother took a loan and took Harjinder Kaur to this position in the field of sports. Harjinder Kaur herself used to cut fodder for the buffaloes kept in the house with the Toka machine.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday announced a cash prize of Rs 40 lakh for weightlifter Harjinder Kaur, who bagged a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Britain’s Birmingham.

In a statement issued here, the Chief Minister, while congratulating Kaur, said that this budding sportsperson from Mehas village near Nabha has made the country proud by her feat.
