VC Prof Karamjeet Singh appointed Chairman of NAAC Coordination Committee
Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University (JGND PSOU) has been given a prestigious assignment by the Punjab Government to facilitate all the colleges of Punjab to get NAAC Accreditation. NAAC Accreditation helps the Institution to know its strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities through an informed review process and identification of internal areas of planning and resource allocation. Realizing the importance of Accreditation, Government of Punjab appointed Prof Karamjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of JGND PSOU as a Chairman of 10-member Coordination Committee consisting of DPI Colleges (Punjab), IQAC Directors of three state Universities (Panjab University Chandigarh, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar and Punjabi University Patiala) and Principals of some colleges.
As per UGC (Mandatory Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Educational Institutions), published in the Gazette of India on January 19, 2013; para 4, it is mandatory for each Higher Educational Institution to get accredited by the Accreditation Agency after passing out of two batches or six years, whichever is earlier. As per clause 7 of the notification, Assessment and Accreditation is a Pre-requisite for getting grants.
After every five years, each college has to get accredited. At present there are around one thousand colleges in Punjab, but only 59 colleges are having valid accreditation as per data available on NAAC website. The colleges who do not get accreditation will not eligible to seek UGC grants.
Prof Karamjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, JGND PSOU who is associated with NAAC for long time and has an expertise in the area, was earlier appointed by NAAC Bengaluru to prepare State Level Analysis of Accredited Higher Education Institutions of Punjab. While appreciating the initiative taken by the Punjab Government for facilitating colleges to get accreditation, Prof Karamjeet Singh informed that first meeting of Coordination Committee will be held on 30th September, where strategy will be chalked out to execute the mandate of the Government. He further informed that he is in touch with Director, NAAC and two workshops are being planned with the help of NAAC experts from Bengaluru where NAAC accreditation process will be explained in respect of seven Criteria Evaluation consisting of Curricular Aspects; Teaching-Learning and Evaluation; Research, Consultancy and Extension; Infrastructure and Learning Resources; Student Support and Progression; Governance, Leadership and Management; Institutional Values and Best Practices. The Experts will clarify the doubts and explain requisite nuances of the accreditation process. Dr Amitoj Singh, Coordinator IQAC, JGNDPSOU is the secretary of Coordination Committee.
