California: Sikh Student arrested for keeping Kirpan in University
SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said incident of an Amritdhari (initiated) Sikh student at @unccharlotte University of North Carolina, Charlotte, USA, being arrested by police from campus for wearing Sikh ‘kirpan’ & removing his kirpan is highly condemnable.
Kirpan is one of five symbols of Sikh faith, & as per Sikh code of conduct, Amritdhari Sikh is bound to keep these symbols on his body at all times. He said arresting Sikh Amritdhari student & insulting him in this way, is major violation of religious rights of Sikhs,
for which US government should take action against culprits. He urged India’s Foreign Minister @DrSJaishankar & Indian Ambassador to USA @SandhuTaranjitS, to look into this matter & ensure religious sentiments of Sikhs in USA are not hurt in future.
