Punjab Defence Services Welfare Minister S. Chetan Singh Jauramajra today expressed his condolences on the demise of Mata Surjit Kaur, wife of freedom fighter Bhai Veer Singh Veer, who passed away at the age of 108.

The Cabinet Minister said, Mata Surjit Kaur’s life was a testament to the strength and resilience of the Punjabi spirit. Her journey spanning more than a century was adorned with moments of wisdom and significant contributions to Punjab’s rich cultural heritage. Her association as a life-partner of legendary freedom fighter Bhai Veer Singh Veer added even more significance to her life story. During India’s struggle for independence, Bhai Veer Singh Veer of Amritsar spent four years in jail with Mahatma Gandhi in 1942, while Mata Surjit Kaur steadfastly stood by his side throughout that period, sharing 10 months of incarceration.

In this time of sorrow, Cabinet Minister S. Chetan Singh Jauramajra extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and prayed to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and strength and solace to the bereaved family and loved ones.

The loss of such a venerable figure left an indelible void, but the legacy of Mata Surjit Kaur will continue to inspire generations to come, said Chetan Singh Jauramajra, adding that her memory will forever remain in our hearts. Mata Surjit Kaur is survived by a son Amarjit Singh Bhatia and daughter Inderjit Kaur.
