Stray dog bite: Punjab, Haryana HC rules Rs 10,000/tooth mark compensation

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that in cases relating to dog bites, financial assistance shall be a minimum of Rs 10,000 per tooth mark. When the flesh has been pulled off the skin, the compensation will be a minimum of Rs 20,000 per 0.2 cm of the wound.

In disposing of 193 pleas, the high court also mandated the states of Punjab and Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to establish committees chaired by the deputy commissioners of respective districts to determine such compensation.

“The award should be issued by the committees within four months of the claims being filed, along with the necessary documents…The State will primarily be responsible for paying compensation, with the right to recover the same from defaulting agencies, instrumentalities of the State, or private individuals,” stated a bench of Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj.
