Punjab:Vigilance Bureau arrests Water Supply and Sanitation dept SDO, Fitter Helper for demanding Rs one lakh bribe

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state on Thursday arrested Agamjot Singh SDO, Water Supply and Sanitation department Kapurthala and Manjit Singh, Fitter Helper, posted in his office for demanding a bribe of Rs.1,00,000.

          Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of VB said both the above said accused have been arrested on an online complaint lodged by a civil contractor, Jatinder Singh, a resident of Sular Road, Patiala on the Chief Minister Anti-Corruption Action Line.

          He further added that the complainant has informed in his complaint that his construction firm M/s Guraya Contractors, Patiala was allotted two works at PTU Kapurthala and the said accused has imposed a penalty of Rs. 2,49,824 on his firm for delaying in one work. Meanwhile the complainant has withdrawn a part of penalty amounting to Rs.1,59,951 by forging a receipt and the accused SDO and his Fitter Helper threatened him to lodge a criminal complaint for this act if he didn’t paid Rs 7 lakhs as a bribe. The complainant further revealed that the deal was struck at Rs one lakh but he deposited the penalty amount of Rs.1,59,951 to the department when the said accused threatened him to lodge a complaint in this regard. Meanwhile the complainant contractor recorded the conversation with the said accused for demanding the bribe money.

          The spokesperson informed that the VB Jalandhar range investigated this online complaint and arrested the above said SDO and Fitter Helper after finding them guilty for demanding the bribe money from the complainant. In this regard a case under Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at VB police station at Jalandhar range. Both the accused would be produced in the competent court tomorrow and further investigation into the case are under progress.
