DBU celebrated National Science Day

The Agrim club of Desh Bhagat University’s Department of Agriculture and Life Sciences celebrated National Science Day with fervor and enthusiasm. The event featured an expert talk and a science-based competition on Indigenous Technologies For Viksit Bharat. Dr. SS Hundal, a retired professor from PAU, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The programme was inaugurated by DBU Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh and Pro-Chancellor Dr. Tejinder Kaur.

Dr. SS Hundal emphasized the significance of indigenous technology, referring to it as the tools, techniques, crafts, and systems developed by indigenous communities. He stressed the importance of integrating science into our lives, highlighting its objective nature and the need for verification. Dr. Hundal expressed concern over the proliferation of superstitions, urging individuals to critically assess them and prioritize their scientific aspect.

Speaking on the differences between traditional indigenous technologies and modern technologies, Dr. Hundal noted that traditional methods often utilize locally available materials and foster collaboration within communities, while modern technologies may rely on a wider range of resources and can be developed and used in more individualistic or competitive settings. He emphasized the strengths and limitations of both approaches, advocating for mutual learning and collaboration between them.

The event also highlighted India’s achievements in indigenous technology, such as the INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenously developed aircraft carrier, and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, India’s first indigenously developed vaccine.

A quiz competition was also conducted as part of the celebration. Dr. HK Sidhu, Head of the Department, extended the vote of thanks. The event was attended by Dr. Surjeet Patheja, Bhupinder Pal, and other faculty members.
