Basant Mela Extravaganza : Desh Bhagat University Celebrates Punjabi Folk Culture
The Centre for Punjabi Language, Folklore, and Culture at Desh Bhagat University’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages hosted a vibrant celebration of Basant Mela, showcasing the rich tapestry of Punjabi folk culture. The event, brimming with fervor and enthusiasm, attracted esteemed guests and enthusiastic participants alike.
Chief Guest Pro-Chancellor Dr. Tajinder Kaur and Special Guest of Honour Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh graced the occasion, adding prestige to the festivities. Advisor to Chancellor Dr. Virinder Singh, Registrar Dr. Rahul Sharma, and Dr. Surjeet Patheja were also present, enhancing the event’s significance.
The festivities commenced with a heartfelt welcome from Dr. Devinder Kumar, Director of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, who elaborated on the historical significance of Basant Mela, aiming to bridge the gap between generations and uphold cultural heritage.
Dr. Kanwaljeet Singh’s team mesmerized the audience with a presentation of Basant Raag, featuring soul-stirring GurBani singing and an invocation to Goddess Saraswati.
In a significant announcement, four new courses were introduced in the department, including MA Gurmat Sangeet, MA Music Vocal, MA Music Instrumental, and MA Music Tabla. Additionally, Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh pledged a grant of Rs 51 thousand to the department, furthering its endeavors.
Attendees were treated to captivating Punjabi cultural performances, encompassing the energetic rhythms of bhangra luddi, soulful renditions of traditional Punjabi songs, and a mesmerizing Punjabi traditional parade. The event also featured a range of Punjabi folk games, including kite flying, marbles, stapoo, kikkli, and rope skipping, evoking joy and laughter among participants of all ages. Students Sant Pratap Singh and Honey showcased their talent with Punjabi folk songs, while international students impressed with their bhangra skills.
In his Vote of Thanks, Dr. Ram Singh, expressed gratitude to all participants, guests, and organizers for their invaluable contributions to the success of the Basant Mela celebration.
The Basant Mela celebration not only served as a platform to showcase Punjab’s rich cultural heritage but also fostered a sense of pride and belonging among participants. Through such events, Desh Bhagat University remains committed to preserving and promoting Punjabi culture for generations to come. The stage was ably conducted by Dr. Renu Sharma and Dr. Jyoti Sharma.
