Mandi Gobindgarh, 2 October: Desh Bhagat University Unnat Bharat/Swachh Bharat Cell organised “Waste to Art” activity as part of the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ fortnight, which is celebrated annually from September 14 to October 1. This initiative is vital for promoting cleanliness and sanitation across India. This year’s theme, “Swabhav Swachhata – Sanskaar Swachhata”, was chosen to emphasize the intrinsic values of cleanliness and cultural responsibility in our daily lives.
Under the guidance of Dr Zora Singh Chancellor and Dr Tajinder Kaur Pro-Chancellor of DBU, the event served as a prelude to Swachh Bharat Diwas, celebrated on October 2, which marks a significant commitment to a cleaner India.
The event aimed to inspire participants to explore their creativity while simultaneously fostering environmental awareness. By transforming waste materials such as plastic bottles, newspapers, and other recyclable items into art, participants learned the importance of recycling and sustainable practices. Local artists provided guidance and mentorship, allowing attendees to enhance their skills and engage in hands-on artistic expression. This collaborative atmosphere not only promoted creativity but also encouraged participants to think critically about waste management and its implications for the environment.
The competition culminated in a public exhibition where the artworks were showcased, evaluated by a panel of distinguished judges, including Dr. Arshdeep Singh, Student Welfare Officer, Dr. Avinash Bhatia, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Miss Shivangi Sood, Assistant Professor. The judges recognized outstanding contributions, awarding 1st Position to Jyoti and Akshay from the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences, 2nd Position to M.Sc. Vegetable Science students and 3rd Position to Gurjot Kaur and Pradhyuman Singh from the Fine Arts Department. The recognition not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the collective effort towards environmental sustainability.
Special acknowledgment is due to key figures that facilitated the event’s success, including Dr. H.K. Sidhu, Director, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Dr. Yeti Dutt, Associate Professor and Head of the Fine Arts Department, and Dr. Arshdeep Singh, Student Welfare Officer. Their unwavering support and coordination were instrumental in executing this initiative. Overall, the “Waste to Art” activity not only fostered creativity and community bonding but also reinforced the importance of adopting sustainable practices. Participants left with a renewed sense of responsibility towards the environment, strengthening the community’s commitment to waste management and sustainability in their daily lives.
