Country’s first-ever GIB chick hatched through AI at Jaisalmer breeding centre
The Bustard Recovery Program achieved a historic milestone by successfully producing the first-ever Great Indian Bustard (GIB) chick through artificial insemination (AI) in the country at the National Conservation Breeding Centre in Jaisalmer. This marks a crucial step forward in conserving this critically endangered species.
The process involved collecting semen from a three-year-old male GIB ‘Sudha’ from the Ramdevra centre and inseminating a five-year-old female named ‘Toni’ at the Sam centre. The female laid an egg on Sept 24, which was incubated until the chick emerged on Oct 16 in excellent health.
