India recorded its warmest October in 123 years
October 2024 was the warmest October in India in the last 124 years (since 1914), with an average temperature of 26.92 degrees Celsius — exceeding expected levels by 1.23 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Minimum temperatures for October also reached unprecedented levels, the highest since the IMD began keeping records in 1901.
Several weather phenomena reportedly contributed to the higher night temperatures. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD, explained that the delayed exit of the southwest monsoon was responsible for the incoming monsoonal flow. Additionally, four low-pressure systems and the absence of western disturbances that could keep the temperatures under check – added to the higher-than-normal minimum temperatures during October, he said.
