Village Defence Committees to Play a Crucial Role in the Fight Against Drugs: Health Minister
Nabha/Patiala, May 23:
As part of the Punjab Government’s Nasha Mukti Yatra initiative to eliminate the drug menace from the state, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh is visiting villages in rural Patiala every evening, mobilizing people to stand united against drugs. Continuing this effort, Dr. Balbir Singh visited the villages of Shamla, Hiyana Kalan, and Rohti Khas today. Addressing the villagers, he urged every Punjabi to become a part of the Nasha Mukti Yatra and contribute to this collective mission to eradicate the stigma of drug abuse.
He emphasized that the campaign launched by Chief Minister Shri Bhagwant Singh Mann has now transformed into a people’s movement, with citizens increasingly voicing their opposition to drug traffickers.
Dr. Balbir Singh further informed that Village Defence Committees have been constituted to monitor drug-related activities. These committees will play a vital role in ensuring the success of this campaign. He appealed to villagers to report any drug-related information to committee members or the police. Those preferring anonymity can share information through the WhatsApp helpline: 97791-00200.
The Health Minister also called on villagers to encourage individuals battling addiction within their families or neighborhoods to seek treatment. He added that, alongside medical care, the government has also introduced skill-based, employment-oriented courses at de-addiction centers to support rehabilitation.
Present on the occasion were SDM Nabha Dr. Ismat Vijay Singh, District Coordinator Yadavinder Goldy, Patiala Rural Coordinator Harpal Singh Virk, BDPO Baljeet Singh Sohi, Jai Shankar, Sarpanch Jagjit Singh, and a large gathering of local residents.
