Punjab News: Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Releases Punjabi Translation of Landmark Book “Kudrati Kheti Vidhan“ on Natural Farming

Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Prit Pal Singh released an important book titled Kudrati Kheti Vidhan (Natural Farming System), a Punjabi translation of a classic work on natural agriculture. The original English book, An Agricultural Testament, was written by Sir Albert Howard and published by Oxford University Press on 1 June 1940. The book elaborates on natural farming systems, with special emphasis on how to naturally maintain the fertility of the soil for growing various crops. Through his experiences, the author proves that the soil does not require any chemical fertilizers or chemical sprays. The health of the soil can be permanently restored naturally through humus. The author writes that humans and animals fed on grains grown with artificial fertilizers cannot remain healthy, and their breeds also gradually become artificial.
The book has been translated into Punjabi under the title Kudrati Kheti Vidhan by Prof. (Dr.) Sukhwinder Singh Billing, Dean Academic Affairs and Dean Faculty of Agriculture, and Dr. Jaspreet Kaur Dhillon, Head, Department of Agriculture. After the Green Revolution, the use of artificial chemical fertilizers and sprays has severely damaged the health of the soil, making it like a sick person. Besides this, underground water has also been badly affected by chemical fertilizers and sprays. In the world, there are very few regions where natural farming systems are being practiced, which is why their soil, underground water, and environment have remained safe. After the Green Revolution, agricultural land, underground water, and the environment across the world have been ruined due to the use of artificial chemical fertilizers and sprays. Any farming system based on artificial fertilizers and sprays cannot be sustainable. The same situation has occurred in Punjab’s agriculture. The impact of chemical fertilizers and sprays after the Green Revolution has deeply affected the soil and water in Punjab as well.
This book is important because, on one hand, it connects us with natural farming practices that are always sustainable, and on the other, it identifies the causes of degradation in agricultural land, soil, and underground water. The book emphasises that no sustainable farming system can be established without livestock. In agriculture-dominated regions like Punjab, where fields are small, natural farming practices can be easily adopted. The book also discusses the high quality of naturally grown grains. The book release ceremony was attended by Dr. Sikandar Singh, Dean Faculty of Languages, Dr. Hardev Singh, Dean Faculty of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies, Dr. Harneet Billing, Dean Faculty of Education and Information Science, Dr. Richa Brar, Head Department of Mathematics, along with senior professors and faculty members of the Agriculture Department
