Patiala News:Appeal to departments to make joint efforts to prevent tobacco use

The meeting of the District Level Tobacco Control Committee under the National Tobacco Control Program was held today at the District Administrative Complex, Patiala under the leadership of Additional Deputy Commissioner Navreet Kaur Sekhon and Civil Surgeon Patiala Dr. Shelly Jaitley. The meeting was coordinated by District Program Officer (NTCP) Dr. Inderpreet Randhawa.
The meeting was attended by all SMOs, program officers and officers of various departments. During this, detailed discussions were held to prevent tobacco use and make people aware about the ill effects of tobacco.
During the meeting, various sections of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act and guidelines to ensure its effective compliance were shared. The officers were motivated to take necessary steps to stop smoking in public places, ensure compliance with the rules regarding sale of tobacco products and keep the youth away from tobacco addiction.
On this occasion, Advocate Astha Bagga and Advocate Gagan Kaur gave a special presentation. They gave information about the provisions of COTPA Act, the adverse health effects of tobacco use and the role of various departments for tobacco control.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Mrs. Navreet Kaur Sekhon appealed to the officers of all departments to play an active role in the tobacco control campaign and work in coordination with each other. She said that not only the health department but all the departments need to make joint efforts to reduce tobacco use.
During the meeting, emphasis was laid on creating maximum awareness among the people about the harms caused by tobacco consumption and working together to create a tobacco-free society. The contribution made by the representatives of Generation Savior Association in making the District Level Tobacco Control Committee meeting a success was also appreciated.
