– Won bronze medal at Commonwealth Fencing Championship, bringing laurels to India

– Mehta approves Rs 2.5 lakh for fencing scoring machine

Fencing player Arjun Verma, who brought laurels to India and Patiala by winning a bronze medal in the Foil event at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship held in Lagos, Nigeria, was honoured by Tejinder Mehta, Chairman, District Planning Committee.

Congratulating Arjun Verma on his outstanding achievement, Tejinder Mehta said that Arjun had brought glory to the country at the international level through his hard work, dedication and commitment to the sport. He said that Patiala is known as a land of sports and players like Arjun are further strengthening its rich sporting legacy through their achievements. He said Arjun’s success would serve as an inspiration to the youth of Patiala.

Arjun Verma has earlier represented India at the Fencing World Cup and the Asian Games-2023. Over the past several years, he has also won medals at various national-level fencing competitions. A resident of Patiala, Arjun is currently serving as a Fencing Coach with the Sports Department and is training young players in the sport.

On Arjun Verma’s request, Rs 2.5 lakh has been approved from the District Planning Committee fund for providing a fencing scoring machine (apparatus) for his students. The amount will be released to the Sports Department shortly. Tejinder Mehta said that along with honouring the achievements of players, it was equally important to provide them with the necessary equipment and facilities for better training and practice. He said that every possible support would be extended to promote sports and encourage players.

On the occasion, senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and State Award-winning theatre personality Gulzar Patialvi, former president of the Ex-Police Pensioners Association Bhupinder Singh Waraich, Trade Commission member Nirmal Jhaneri and social worker Gagan Pandhi were present.
