The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) tore into the BJP government over its response to growing concerns about women’s safety in Delhi, with National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal questioning the advice being given to girls to stay indoors after 7 pm. He asserted that instead of restricting women’s freedom, the government must strengthen security through CCTV cameras, street lights and effective monitoring.

The AAP Chief pointed to the 2.62 lakh CCTV cameras and 2.80 lakh street lights installed under the AAP Government, revealing that more than half are now non-functional. He emphasised that women are independent citizens with the right to live freely and that the government’s responsibility is to ensure their safety, not impose restrictions on them.

Sharing a video message on Tuesday, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal stated, “After the Astha Kunj rape case, Delhi’s female students are extremely angry. Students from several women’s colleges are out on the streets, demanding safety. The government added insult to injury by lecturing them online. The government has told girls to stop stepping out of their homes in the evening and at night. Why are all the restrictions imposed only on girls?”

He continued, “The government has failed to do its job. If the government is incompetent, does that mean it will impose restrictions on women? The government should provide security and install CCTV cameras.”

Arvind Kejriwal emphasised, “Delhi is the national capital, and the government cannot provide security within Delhi? Cover the entire city with a network of CCTV cameras and monitor it in real time. If you establish a central command structure for real-time monitoring and install street lights at dark spots across the city, you will see that all women will automatically start feeling safer.”

“When our government was in power, we installed 2,62,000 CCTV cameras and 2,80,000 street lights. Today, more than half of them are not functioning. They should be made operational. Two female police officers should be deployed inside every college,” he shared.

The AAP Chief asserted, “The most important thing is that whenever someone commits rape or harasses a girl, he immediately joins their party, and the entire administration gets involved in protecting that rapist. This sends a message that anyone who harasses girls can join their party and nothing will happen to him.”

He concluded by stating, “Today, we have to ensure the safety of our female students. Stop lecturing women that they should not step out of their homes after 7 pm. They are also independent citizens of this country and have fundamental rights. They are human beings too. They have the right to live and the right to freedom. They should have complete freedom, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure their complete safety.”
