BJP Must Clarify Whether FIR Has Been Registered On Dalit Leader’s Complaint: Jasvir Singh Garhi

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Chamkaur Sahib constituency in-charge Jasvir Singh Garhi on Wednesday condemned the assault on Congress Dalit leader Ranjit Singh Tarkhan Majra inside Congress Bhawan in Chandigarh, questioning the Congress leadership’s claims of protecting Dalit rights and demanding answers from former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi over allegations against his close aide, Barinder Singh Dhillon.

Addressing a press conference,AAP leader and Chamkur Sahib In-charge Jasvir Singh Garhi stated, “Ranjit Singh Tarkhan Majra is a Dalit leader, former village sarpanch and former Market Committee chairman. He has complained to Chandigarh Police that Barinder Singh Dhillon physically assaulted him, used casteist slurs and threatened to kill him. The allegations are extremely serious and must be investigated fairly.”

The AAP leader pointed out, “Congress leaders speak about protecting Dalits, but a Dalit leader has complained of being assaulted and threatened inside Congress Bhawan itself. If Dalits are not safe inside the Congress’s own office, how can the party claim to protect Dalits anywhere else?”

“Barinder Singh Dhillon is known to be close to Charanjit Singh Channi and has publicly backed the former Chief Minister. Charanjit Singh Channi must now break his silence and tell the people whether he stands for the dignity of Dalits or will continue to stand by his close associates despite these serious allegations,” said Jasvir Singh Garhi.

He noted, “Ranjit Singh Tarkhan Majra has approached Chandigarh Police seeking registration of an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The authorities must examine the complaint and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.”

Taking a dig at Charanjit Singh Channi’s social media posts about KGF, Jasvir Singh Garhi said, “Charanjit Singh Channi keeps posting about KGF, but the question is what is happening to Dalits inside the Congress. KGF here stands for ‘Kuttia, Gharisya and Fentya’: beaten, dragged and humiliated. This is the question the Congress leadership must answer.”

“Charanjit Singh Channi must also explain his social media post promoting a song calling upon Punjabis to pick up arms and abandon their ploughs. Punjab has suffered immensely during its painful period of violence. Political leaders must consider the implications of promoting such messaging instead of playing with the memories and sensitivities of the people of Punjab,” said Jasvir Singh Garhi.

The AAP leader said, “The Congress cannot repeatedly claim to champion social justice while questions continue to be raised about the dignity and treatment of Dalit leaders within its own organisation. The party must answer questions about its historical treatment of Dalit leaders, including Baba Sahib Ambedkar, and explain how it proposes to uphold the political rights, representation and dignity of Dalits.”

“Chandigarh comes under the Union Territory administration controlled by the BJP-led Central Government. The BJP must explain what action has been taken on the complaint submitted by Ranjit Singh Tarkhan Majra. Has an FIR been registered? Has the complaint been investigated? The administration must provide clear answers instead of limiting itself to claims about protecting Dalit rights,” said Jasvir Singh Garhi.

The AAP leader affirmed, “Dalit dignity and equality cannot remain limited to political speeches. When a Dalit leader approaches the police with allegations of caste-based abuse, assault and threats, the authorities must act impartially and ensure that the complaint is investigated thoroughly.”

Jasvir Singh Garhi demanded an impartial investigation into the allegations against Barinder Singh Dhillon and appropriate legal action in accordance with the law. He said the Congress leadership and the Chandigarh administration must answer the questions raised by the complaint and ensure that the rights and dignity of Dalits are protected.
