Chandigarh, April 18
Punjab Cabinet Minister and MLA from Malout Baljit Kaur gave a befitting reply to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal’s recent visit to Malout grain market, accusing him of spreading misinformation and playing “political gimmicks” at the expense of farmers.
Clarifying the situation, Baljit Kaur said that she was not present in Malout on the day of Badal’s visit due to a cabinet meeting in Chandigarh. She said, “If he had come in my presence, I would have personally welcomed him and apprised him of the ground reality.”
Responding to the claims of non-commencement of procurement, he said, “The crop of the farmer whose procurement I had initiated was procured on the same day. If a farmer repeatedly brings wheat after a gap of several days, then the procurement takes place under a proper queue system. I had already instructed the officials in the mandi that every farmer will get his turn fairly and no one will be given undue priority.”
He stressed that facts should not be distorted for political gain and appealed to people to understand the reality before being misled.
Making a broad political attack, Baljit Kaur said, “How strange it is that leaders who were once confined to their palaces are now forced to reach out to the masses. They are also dragging elders into politics and using their words for trolling and propaganda.”
Referring to the recent hailstorm crisis, he said that many farmers have suffered heavy losses in their crops. “We have been continuously appealing to the Centre to provide relief for damaged wheat. However, the approval letter came only on April 17. Since the procurement is done by the Central Government, I want to ask why Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who represents this region of Punjab in Parliament, did not take timely initiative to provide this relief before the procurement started?”
He further reminded that those who are claiming to stand with the farmers today, were the ones who supported the controversial farm laws. He said, “Farmers should remember who stood with them and who was against them in critical times.”
Reiterating her commitment, Baljit Kaur said that the Punjab government always stands with its people. She said, “Whether they are farmers or mute animals, we are ensuring help in every crisis. Recently, we have also arranged fodder for the animals in the affected villages.”
He said that the AAP government will continue to work honestly for the welfare of the people and expose those who indulge in opportunistic politics.
