Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, while speaking at an event organized regarding ‘War against drugs’ at Government Bikram College, Patiala, said that the campaign launched by the Punjab Government against drugs is receiving an overwhelming response from the people. He said that with the cooperation of Village Defence Committees, the campaign will be further strengthened and direct contact with people will now be established village-to-village.

The Health Minister said that modern technology is also being used to prevent drug trafficking. In border and sensitive areas, surveillance is being carried out through drones to keep an ‘eagle eye’ on drug trafficking activities.

Dr. Balbir Singh said that persons involved in drug trafficking will be brought under the law, while special and unique initiatives are being undertaken to bring youth trapped in drug addiction out of it. He said that under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab Government is committed to eliminating the roots of drugs from Punjab.

He said that treatment and rehabilitation facilities are being provided through de-addiction centres for persons willing to quit drugs. Along with this, necessary arrangements have also been made for drug-dependent persons lodged in jails, so that they can receive treatment and support.

He said that the results of meetings related to Patiala Rural and efforts being made at the grassroots level are now emerging. The government has called upon the administration, police, Health Department, Village Defence Committees and the general public to work together to take the campaign against drugs to its final stage.

Dr. Balbir Singh said that the fight against drugs is not only the responsibility of the government, but the collective responsibility of the entire society. With the cooperation of the people, rapid progress is being made towards the goal of making Punjab drug-free.

On this occasion, Aam Aadmi Party’s Stage Secretary Jagtar Singh Jagga, SDM Gurdev Singh Dhamm, DSP, officials of the Health Department, college students and members of the Village Defence Committee were present with him.
