Patiala:Fire at RGNUL Girls Hostel

At 3 am on 20th August, there was an electricity fire in the top floor of Laxmbai Hall (G Block of Girls Hostel) at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala. Apparently, the AC had a short circuit which led to a huge fire.

When the attendants in the girls hostel were approached for the same, they told that they will call an electrician. Please note that there was no mention about evacuation or even trying to extinguish the fire.

After the situation had got worse and there was a lot of smoke, the girls started to knock at everyone’s room to evacuate them. Please note that no evacuation protocol exists in our college. Even worse, there is no fire alarm system in hostels. Nobody here has been given any disaster management training.

After all the girls were safely evacuated, the guards from the Boys Hostel came to extinguish the fire. Please note that there was no person in the Girls Hostel who could extinguish the rapidly growing fire. This only resulted in more delay in action.

The authorities here have made a joke out of “students safety”. Every girl is traumatised and is feeling unsafe.

Being a law student, I firmly believe in the power of press. I beseech you to kindly raise awareness on this issue. We want the authorities to listen to us, loudly.
