*Priority is being given to increasing soil fertility by cultivating crop residues in the fields*
*Also honored by the Punjab Government*
Progressive farmer Hardeep Singh son of Major Singh of village Aloharan in Patiala district has set a commendable example in the field of environmental conservation by not burning paddy stubble and wheat stalks for the last 8 years. His initiative is not only a source of inspiration for other farmers, but also sends a message of conservation of natural resources and moving towards sustainable agriculture.
Farmer Hardeep Singh cultivates about 10 acres of land. He prefers to maintain soil fertility and improve its health by cultivating it in the fields instead of burning crop residues. He believes that proper management of crop residues in the fields increases organic matter in the soil, which improves the quality of the land and can also help reduce the cost of farming in the long run.
According to Hardeep Singh, burning of stubble and straw increases smoke and pollutant particles in the environment. This not only harms human health but also affects the beneficial microorganisms present in the soil. Therefore, farmers should use crop residues as a useful resource for agriculture instead of considering them as a burden.
He said that proper management of stubble is the need of the hour. If farmers manage crop residues in the fields and adopt appropriate techniques as per the advice of agricultural experts, then the environment can be protected from pollution as well as the health of the soil can be improved.
Farmer Hardeep Singh does not limit this initiative to his own fields only, but also motivates other farmers to not burn stubble and manage crop residues properly. His initiative also sends a message of increasing awareness among the farmers of the area towards eco-friendly farming.
He has also been honored by the Punjab Government for his efforts towards environmental conservation and stubble management. This honor is a recognition of his continuous hard work and responsible thinking towards the environment.
Hardeep Singh says that it is very important to not burn stubble to ensure a clean environment, healthy soil and a safe future for future generations. He appealed to farmers to contribute to the conservation of the environment by adopting proper methods of stubble management, so that agriculture can be made more sustainable and profitable.
