Patiala, May 6:

In a pioneering initiative aimed at promoting health, discipline, and a drug-free lifestyle among Punjab’s youth, international Kabaddi player and MLA Gurlal Ghanaur has taken the lead in developing sports infrastructure across his constituency. With volleyball courts constructed in 173 out of 175 villages at an estimated cost of ₹10 crore, Ghanaur is set to become the first constituency in the state with a dedicated sports ground in every village.

Nearly 98% of the construction work has been completed, and all courts are expected to be fully operational for players by the end of May. Emphasizing the role of physical fitness and community engagement, MLA Gurlal Ghanaur stated that these efforts aim to connect children, youth, and even the elderly with an active and healthy lifestyle.

“Inspired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision, our government is committed to strengthening grassroots sports infrastructure. The goal is not merely recreation, but building a stronger and healthier Punjab,” he said.

The newly developed volleyball courts—mostly situated near schools or accessible public spaces—are equipped with floodlights, enabling groups of 10–15 players to play even during evening hours. Additionally, 15 larger multi-sport grounds, ranging from 1 to 4 acres, are under development. Among these, grounds in Kheri Gurna (₹40 lakh) and Ghadam (₹20 lakh) are already seeing high levels of participation from local players.

Highlighting further developments, the MLA shared that a modern gymnasium has been built at University College, Ghanaur, at a cost of ₹1 crore, while 40 additional gyms have been set up across the constituency. Work is also underway to introduce a rowing facility in village Dhindsa on Rajpura Road—another unique addition to the region’s growing sports infrastructure.

“If 20 children from each village start using these courts regularly, over 3,500 youth across the constituency will be actively participating in daily sports,” he said. “Our aim is to produce national and international-level athletes from these very grounds who will bring pride to Punjab.”

President of the Punjab Kabaddi Association, Gurlal Ghanaur, also highlighted the success of the state government’s flagship sports initiative Khedan Watan Punjab Dian, now in its third consecutive year. The event has seen participation from lakhs of people across age groups, with crores in prize money awarded to winning athletes—further encouraging competitive sports in the state.

Looking ahead, the MLA emphasized his commitment to integrating every child, youngster, and senior citizen into the sports ecosystem of Ghanaur. “These fields are becoming vibrant centers of energy, fitness, and community spirit. We are confident they will soon produce champions who will shine on national and international platforms,” he said.
