The Department of Chemical Engineering of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology has organized a three-day international conference from February 22-24, 2024 on “Sustainable Development in Chemical and Environmental Engineering.”

On the day of inaugural function, the chief guest Prof. A. B. Pandit Vice Chancellor, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, addressed the academicians and researchers who had come from various national and international institutes and organizations and presented a talk on “Process and Nature”. He discussed the sustainability, its relevant time frame and the challenges faced by the humanity. Prof. Padmakumar Nair (Director, TIET) talked in length about sustainability and the best ways to achieve that. Prof. Ajay Batish (Deputy Director, TIET) delved in length about the progress made by the institute in the last decade, especially in the area of research and teaching pedagogy.

The welcome address was given by Dr. Rajeev Mehta (Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, TIET). In his address Dr. Mehta emphasized that the conference has been planned to be the place where minds converge, ideas flourish, and innovation takes center stage. He added that in the vast landscape of chemical engineering, we find ourselves at the challenging crossroads of science, technology, and industry. Our shared expertise holds the key to overcoming modern multi-faceted problems, from developing cutting-edge materials to optimizing existing processes. Yet, let us not forget the ethical responsibility that accompanies our knowledge – a responsibility to wield our expertise with awareness of its impact on society and the environment. The other coin of the conference theme, Environmental Engineering, is the bridge to a sustainable future, calls for innovative solutions that harmonize industry with nature. As we converge to discuss groundbreaking research and sustainable practices, we should renew our commitment to being stewards of the environment. Lastly, he mentioned that the multidisciplinary conference theme, “Innovations in Chemical and Environmental Engineering,” challenges us to think beyond traditional boundaries”.

The Convenor, Dr. Avinash Chandra shared that, in this conference, a total of 180 research articles would be presented, 110 in person and another 70 in the virtual Mode. The Keynote speakers and participants from abroad include the various distinguished academicians and researchers such as Prof. Animesh Jha (University of Leeds, UK), Prof. Fulvia Chiampo, (Politecnico di Torino, Italy), Prof. S. Bedi, (University of Waterloo, Canada), Dr. Prhashanna Ammu, (Mondelez International, USA), Dr. Jhumma Sadhu Khan (University of Surrey, UK) and Prof. Roop L. Mahajan (Virginia Tech. University, USA). In this conference, participants from various reputed national Institutes such as IIT Kharagpur, ICT Mumbai, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Jammu, IIT Ropar, CBRI Roorkee, NPL Delhi, CFEES DRDO, IIT Delhi, and BITS Pilani etc. are also participating.

The organizers gratefully acknowledge the support from the following: Saraswati Group, Punjab (SAIPL), Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).
